'70s Inspired Trends To Try Now

By Kristen Peuvion on January 21, 2015

Everything in fashion eventually comes back into style. This past year we saw plaid, platforms and minimalist trends come back thanks to a huge revival of the ’90s. This year, though, a different decade is about to come back in style: the ’70s.

Don’t get worried about seeing thousands of awful polyester pant suits and guys wearing v-necks practically down to their navels, though. Instead, the best trends from the decade that gave us disco and hippies are back in style!

So hop on the bandwagon and try out one of these fabulous ’70s inspired pieces in your wardrobe.

The Jumpsuit

Rompers have been in style for a while now, but jumpsuits are just starting to gain popularity again. The ’70s made them super popular, but the trend died down after that. Now, though, jumpsuits are sold in virtually any women’s fashion store.

A sleek black tank jumpsuit is the perfectly chic option for those looking to try out the trend for the first time. It’s classic and flattering on any body type. Plus, it’s not so bold that you’ll be making a huge statement.

If you’re looking to try a riskier jumpsuit, an all denim one would be my pick. Pair it with your favorite sandal heels and you’ve got yourself the perfect outfit for a date.

Denim

Designers used a ton of denim on the runway to showcase the ’70s trend, but not just jeans–think long denim skirts and chambray shirts.

A denim skirt might seem a bit strange but the look is truly ’70s chic. It’s definitely a bold choice, but you can look just as fabulous as the models.

Fringe

Nothing says ’70s more than fringe and we saw a lot of that on the runways at fashion weeks all over the world. Designer Marco de Vincenzo used fringe in a ton of his looks. It was seen on dresses, skirts and jackets and looked absolutely gorgeous on all of them.

Fringe is super fun and flirty and very reminiscent of the ’70s. Try incorporating this look into your closet in the form of a fringe mini skirt. The look is perfect for a night out. The movement in the skirt will make you want to dance the night away with all of your friends.

Or take a more subtle approach to this trend and incorporate fringe into your accessories. You can try a clutch with fringe or a pair of sandal heels with a touch of fringe around the ankle strap. Or even more subtle, try a pair of earrings with a hint of fringe for a look that’s subdued but still very fashion forward.

Bell-bottoms

The bell-bottoms of the ’70s are a little heinous and over the top if you ask me, and I think the fashion world would agree. The bell-bottom trend did appear many times at spring fashion weeks, but not in the garish way of the ’70s.

Instead, the bell-bottom trend is a lot more understated. The flared pants we saw on the runways were elegant and flattering. They were more loose, unstructured and flowy rather than the harsh lines of the old bell-bottoms.

So give your skinny jeans a break this season. Opt for the ’70s look and try out a pair of flared jeans in your closet to mix things up.

Suede

Denim wasn’t the only popular material back in the ’70s. Suede was another super popular fabric that people in the ’70s adored and it is now making its comeback.

An easy way to try this trend now, and not have to wait until the spring, is to find a suede jacket. A camel colored jacket is a classic, so why not give it a bit of an update and find one in suede? This is definitely a look you want to try.

But the classic camel colored suede wasn’t the only thing that popped up on the runway for spring 2015. Suede from the ’70s got a bit of an update when designers used it in fun, unexpected colors and in sleek silhouettes. Derek Lam showed off this overcoat in a beautiful shade of purple and also sent dresses and skirts down the runway in this ’70s inspired material.

Looking at these trends, it’s obvious to see that the ’70s are the latest decade trend to make a comeback. Luckily for us, designers have taken all of the good fashion moments of this decade and left the not so good ones behind.

So forget about the ’90s and say hello to the ’70s by trying out some of these trends in your wardrobe!
